Phillies beat Brewers, advance to NLCS

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Philadelphia used the home run Sunday to beat Milwaukee 6-2 and take its National League Division Series against the Brewers 3-1.

The Phillies will meet the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

Jimmy Rollins hit a lead-off homer in the top of the first. Pat Burrell homered twice, one a three-run shot in the third, the other a solo homer in the eighth. Jayson Werth hit a solo homer in the third.

Burrell had three hits, and like Rollins, Greg Dobbs had two hits for the Phillies, who reached the NLCS for the first time since 1993.

Winning pitcher Joe Blanton (1-0) gave up a run and five hits in six innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Relievers Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge finished.

Milwaukee scored on Prince Fielder's seventh-inning homer and Ryan Braun's eighth-inning RBI single.

Braun and J.J. Hardy had two hits apiece for the Brewers, who were trying to bounce back from an 0-2 deficit.

The losing pitcher was starter Jeff Suppan (0-1).


White Sox win to extend series against Rays

CHICAGO, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Chicago's Dewayne Wise hit a two-run double in a rally that helped the White Sox down Tampa Bay 5-3 Sunday and stay alive in their playoff series.

The Rays, champions of the American League East, lead the best-of-five series two games to one. Game 4 is scheduled for Monday in Chicago.

Wise's hit came during a three-run fourth.

A.J. Pierzynski had two hits and knocked in a run for the Sox, who won the AL Central.

John Danks (1-0) worked 6 2/3 innings and got the win. Danks allowed three runs and seven hits, striking out seven batters.

Matt Garza (0-1) took the loss, giving up all five Chicago runs, along with seven hits, over six innings.

B.J. Upton hit a two-run homer for Tampa Bay.


Katie Smith leads Detroit to WNBA title

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Katie Smith's 18 points led the Detroit Shock to a 76-60 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars Sunday for the WNBA championship.

Smith was named the Most Valuable Player in the finals, which the Shock swept with three straight wins.

Detroit also won the championship in 2003 and 2006.

Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Shock.

Ann Wauters topped San Antonio's scorers with 19 points.

The Silver Stars played in the title series for the first time.


Dustin Johnson bags first PGA Tour trophy

VERONA, N.Y., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Dustin Johnson claimed his first PGA title Sunday, edging Robert Allenby by one shot in the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y.

Johnson, of Columbia, S.C., birdied the final two holes and closed with a 3-under-par 69 for 9-under 279. Allenby, who parred the last two holes, carded a 70.

"It's kind of hard to explain," said Johnson, who earned $1.08 million. "I haven't quite grasped everything yet. Right now I'm feeling pretty good and I'm obviously very, very excited."

Allenby has not won since 2001.

Charles Howell III, a co-leader with Tag Ridings beginning the round, shot a 73 and tied for third place at 7-under 281 with Robert Garrigus (69), Steve Allan (69), Woody Austin (69), Ryuji Imada (69), Matthew Goggin (69) and Davis Love III (70).

Ridings fell to a tie for 27th place after a 7-over 79.
