FRISCO, Texas, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Kenny Cooper scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute Thursday, boosting Dallas into a 1-1 tie with San Jose.
The Earthquakes lost a chance for victory because of a questionable penalty called on Francisco Lima.
A shot fired into the area by Bruno Guarda deflected off Lima's hand. Referee Abiodun Okulaja immediately called a foul, despite San Jose's protests that the handball was unintentional.
Cooper then scored his 16th goal of the season.
Ryan Johnson gave San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute, shortly after he was substituted into the contest.
San Jose (7-10-9) remained five points out of the final automatic playoff berth in the Western Conference. Dallas (8-9-10) is in a tie with Real Salt Lake and Colorado for the last post-season spot in the West.
