VERONA, N.Y., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Jeff Overton fired a 5-under 67 in chilly conditions Thursday to take a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Turning Stone Resort Championship.
Temperatures dropped into the 40s during the day, with crisp weather expected throughout the tournament.
"I had a shirt, I had a sweater, I had a jacket," said Jason Day, who was within two shots of the lead. "It was cold out there."
Steve Allan and Michael Allen were tied for second at 68 while Day, Carlos Franco and Tag Ridings all shot 69.
This is the second of seven events that make up the PGA Tour's Fall Finish, which will determine the final money standings and the top 125 players who will earn their playing privileges for next season.
"Today reminded me when I played college golf in Indiana," Overton said. "There was cold and some wind and some rain -- a little bit of everything."
Overton is currently 142nd on the money list and a high finish would likely wrap up his tour card for next year.
Robert Allenby, who at No. 13 is the highest-ranked player on the money list competing this week, shot a 71 and was tied for 14th.
