Peer ousted at Japan Open

TOKYO, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Sixth-seeded Shahar Peer was an upset loser Wednesday in second-round play of the $175,000 Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo.

Peer dropped a tough 5-7, 6-1 7-6 (9-7) decision to Jarmila Gajdosova mainly because her serve was broken eight times and she was on the defensive much of the match. Gajdosova forced Peer into 20 break-point situations in the match.

In other second-round matches, fifth-seeded Kaia Kanepi rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over Yanina Wickmayer and No. 7-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn breezed by Camille Pin 6-2, 6-2.

Second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues claimed a first-round victory Wednesday, defeating Yung-Jan Chan 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. She'll meet Samantha Stosur, who advanced when Vania King retired after the first set, in the second round.
