Williams' lawyers praise court ruling

NEWARK, N.J., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Lawyers for Jayson Williams say they can use information surrounding an investigator who allegedly used a racial slur to describe the ex-New Jersey Net.

Williams' lawyers said a state appellate panel Monday upheld a Superior Court ruling granting them access to documents regarding the incident in 2002, when Williams, now 40, was being investigated in the death of Costas Christofi, 55, in Alexandria Township, The (Newark) New Jersey Star-Ledger reported Tuesday.

Williams faces an upcoming trial on charges of reckless manslaughter, the Star-Ledger reported. He is alleged to have been playing with a shotgun when it went off and killed Christofi, a limousine driver.

Prosecutors said the investigator's alleged racial comment did not suggest a pervasive attitude against Williams, while defense lawyers have said they have no way of knowing how the comment influenced others on the team investigating Williams.
