Bondarenko reaches 2nd round in Stuttgart

STUTTGART, Germany, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko beat Greek Eleni Daniilidou 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 Monday at the $650,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

Bondarenko's reward will be a second-round match against Serbian star Jelena Jankovic who won last week's China Open.

Chinese Na Li beat Czech Nicole Vaidisova 6-1, 6-2 to set up a second-round match with world No. 1 Serena Williams. Austrian Sybille Bammer beat German Tatjana Malek 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 and next plays Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva of Russia.

This week's top seeds include U.S. Open champion Serena, U.S. Open runner-up and former world No. 1 Jankovic, French Open and Olympic runner-up Dinara Safina and Dementieva. Wimbledon champ and former top-ranked Venus Williams is also playing here this week.
