NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Wes Helms's go-ahead homer in the eighth inning Sunday helped the Florida Marlins to a 4-2 win over New York that eliminated the Mets from the NL wild chase.

With the score tied 2-2 and no outs in the top of the eighth, Helms, batting for Mike Jacobs and facing losing pitcher Scott Schoenweis (2-6), launched his fifth homer this season.

The next Marlins' batter, Dan Uggla, followed with a solo homer of his own, providing Florida 4-2 margin of victory.

John Baker and Josh Willingham added one RBI apiece, while Uggla and Cameron Maybin both had two hits for the Marlins, who won twice in the season-ending three-game series.

The winning pitcher was reliever Joe Nelson (3-1). Matt Lindstrom earned his fifth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

New York scored its runs on Carlos Beltran's sixth-inning homer.

Three others had one hit for the Mets, losers in the last game at Shea Stadium.

It cost them a chance to win the National League wild card battle with Milwaukee.
