Curlin establishes earnings record

ELMONT, N.Y., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Curlin became horse racing's first ever $10 million horse by winning Saturday's $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The reigning horse of the year earned a winner's check of $450,000 Saturday, increasing his lifetime earnings to $10,246,800, which surpassed the record $9,999,815 earned by Cigar.

At Saturday's race, Curlin was ridden by Robby Albarado, the jockey who has been aboard the champion for every start except its first race.

"It's not about the money, it's about his place in history," majority owner Jess Jackson said. "I think Curlin has already proven he's one of the best. That's just an owner's selfish view of the horse he loves. It's an honor just to be included with horses like Cigar."

Trainer Steve Asmussen has seen Curlin become the ninth horse to win back-to-back Jockey Club Gold Cup races, and since winning the 2007 Breeder's Cup, Curlin's lone loss was on turf at the Man o' War Stakes.
