DETROIT, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Detroit reliever Todd Jones, who has collected 319 saves in a 16-year major-league career, Thursday announced his retirement effective the end of the season.

Jones, 40, ranks 14th on the all-time save list and owns the Detroit Tigers' record with 235 career saves. In addition to Detroit, where he spent eight seasons, Jones pitched for Houston, Minnesota, Colorado, Boston, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Florida.

"This is the culmination of 35 years in baseball for me," Jones said. "Detroit was a big part of my career and I'll be a Tiger through and through. From the bottom of my heart, I can't express what it was like to be a Tiger."

He is 4-1 with 18 saves and a 4.97 earned run average over 45 appearances this season. His playing time has been cut by a shoulder injury this year.

The Tigers said they plan to honor Jones during pregame ceremonies Saturday.
