BEIJING, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Top-seeded David Ferrer was upset in straight sets Thursday in second-round play at the $524,000 China Open tennis tournament in Beijing.

Ferrer, coming off a weekend in which he won two matches in Spain's Davis Cup win over the United States, was on the court just more than an hour Thursday in falling 6-3, 6-3 to Dudi Sela. The No. 92-ranked Sela broke Ferrer's serve four times in nine games. Ferrer entered the tournament ranked fifth in the world.

Second-seeded Andy Roddick fired 17 aces in a 6-4, 6-3 win over Brendan Evans. No. 3-seeded Fernando Gonzalez, the tournament's defending champion, also advanced Thursday, winning 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 over Go Soeda.

Fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet made it to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Yan-Hsun-Lu while sixth-seeded Tony Robredo got by Ivo Minar 6-2, 6-3 and No. 7-seeded Rainer Schuettler beat Jean-Claude Scherrer 6-1, 6-4.

But two other seeded players were ousted Thursday: Fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco fell 7-5, 6-4 to Juan Carlos Ferrero and eighth-seeded Sam Querrey lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to Bjorn Phau.

Roddick is paired against Ferrero in Friday's quarterfinals. The rest of that schedule has Gonzalez playing Phau, Gasquet going against Schuettler and Robredo meeting Sela.
