McNair donates to Houston relief effort

HOUSTON, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair has donated $500,000 to the NFL/NFL Players Association Disaster Relief Fund and the fund has matched the donation.

The funds will be given to the Houston Ike Relief Fund.

Many Houston residents remain without power weeks after the hurricane devastated Texas' largest city.

The Houston Texans are trying to raise $2 million for hurricane relief and recovery efforts.

On Tuesday, dozens of Texans players and staff ignored 90-degree temperatures and stifling humidity to pack supply boxes at the Houston Food Bank.

"I'm without power, so I understand," McNair said Thursday. "But at least I have a roof over my head, and some people don't."

McNair, a first-round NFL pick by the Houston Oilers in the 1995 NFL draft, retired on April 17 after a 13-year career.

He was one of only three quarterbacks to pass for 30,000 yards and rush for 3,500 yards in a career.

The others were Fran Tarkenton and Steve Young.
