The Astros Can Do no better than tie for the wild-card lead at the end of the regular season and they must win the rest of their games just to have a chance at that. Both the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers have to lose their remaining games for Houston to remain in contention.
Bourn had a three-run double in the second and singled in a run in the seventh. That helped the Astros take an 8-1 lead into the ninth, but the Red scored five times -- three of the runs coming on Jerry Hairston's homer.
Edwin Encarnacion came to bat representing the tying run, but Jose Valverde recorded a strikeout to end the game and pick up his 43rd save.
Roy Oswalt (17-10) got the win, allowing a run on two hits over six innings.
The loss went to Johnny Cueto (9-14), who was touched for five runs in 2 2/3 innings.
