Tour Championship opens Thursday

ATLANTA, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- The final event of the PGA Tour's playoffs begins Thursday with Vijay Singh having wrapped up the FedEx Cup title and its accompanying $10 million prize.

Singh needs only to play all four rounds of the tournament at the East Lake Golf Club to claim the richest purse in golf.

The concluding event in the four-tournament playoff series turned into an anti-climax this year. Not only did Singh win two of the first three playoff tourneys, thus piling up enough points to clinch the FedEx Cup crown, but the Tour Championship comes a week after the scene-stealing Ryder Cup matches.

Ten of the 12 victorious U.S. Ryder Cup team members will be playing this week. Only Boo Weekley and J.B. Holmes will be missing from the American squad that ended the longest U.S. Ryder Cup losing streak ever.

Sergio Garcia will be the only European Ryder Cup team member playing at East Lake.

Singh will begin the first round at 2:10 p.m. EDT paired with Camilo Villegas.
