NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball Monday suspended Detroit designated hitter Gary Sheffield for four games for his role in Friday's Tigers-Indians game in Cleveland.
A total of four players were suspended because of the brawl. Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona was suspended six games and Indians catcher Victor Martinez and infielder Asdrubal Cabrera both received three-game suspensions.
Sheffield, 39, did not appeal the decision and started serving the suspension immediately, as the Tigers opened a three-game home series with the Kansas City Royals.
Carmona hit Sheffield with a pitch. After Carmona tried to pick him off at first, Sheffield charged the mound.
Four players were ejected as a result of the melee: Sheffield, Carmona, Martinez and Tigers infielder Placido Polanco.
Carmona and Martinez, whose suspensions were to start Monday night, decided to appeal the ruling. Cabrera's suspension is scheduled to begin Thursday, but he hasn't decided whether to appeal.
