Saints' tight end out 3 to 6 weeks

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints confirmed Monday that tight end Jeremy Shockey will undergo hernia surgery this week and be out three to six weeks.

Shockey, acquired in the offseason from the New York Giants in exchange for second and fifth-round draft choices in 2009, has 16 receptions for 151 yards in New Orleans' first three games this season.

Shockey, 28, aggravated the injury against the Denver Broncos Sunday, when he finished with eight receptions for 75 yards.

Shockey was selected by New York in the first round (14th overall) of the 2002 NFL draft. He played his first six years with the Giants and had 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns on 371 receptions. He was sidelined last year during New York's Super Bowl run after breaking his left leg in Week 15 against the Washington Redskins.
