
DETROIT, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- David DeJesus was 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored Monday to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Alberto Callaspo extended his hitting streak to 16 games and scored twice for the Royals, who -- despite being in last place in the AL Central -- have won nine of their last 11 games. The Royals, who have finished in last place each of the previous four seasons, are only one game behind fourth-place Detroit.
Mike Aviles had two hits and two RBI for Kansas City.
Winning pitcher Gil Meche (13-11) gave up two runs on four hits over six innings.
Detroit, which had just four hits, lost for the 10th time in 11 games.
Zach Miner (8-5) allowed four runs on six hits over six-plus innings to end his three-decision winning streak.
