NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Pitcher Jason Marquis stroked a grand slam homer and drove in five runs Monday night to help the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 9-5.
In addition to the grand slam, Marquis (11-9) had an RBI groundout. He allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, to enable the Cubs to clinch the best record in the National League (95-60).
Derrek Lee also homered for the Cubs, who wrapped up the NL Central during the weekend and have home-field advantage leading up to the World Series. Ryan Theriot was 3-for-3 with a pair of walks in the victory.
The Mets trail the Phillies in the NL East by 2 1/2 games after Philadelphia beat Atlanta 6-2 Monday.
Jonathon Niese (1-1) gave up six runs on seven hits in three-plus innings for New York.
David Wright hit a two-run homer for the Mets, who were just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 men on base.
