Yankee Stadium's last game on deck

NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Sunday's final game at Yankee Stadium is a chance for fans to take a stroll on memory lane by walking around the field, the New York Yankees said.

Ticket holders were to be allowed to walk behind home plate, along the warning track and through famed Monument Park in center field before the historic contest between the Yanks and visiting Baltimore.

NY1 reported the gates would open at 1 p.m. EDT with a pre-game ceremony featuring various Yankee legends at 7:30 p.m.

The Yankees will play next season in the new Yankee Stadium being completed next door to the House that Ruth Built.

Newsday reported Sunday that earlier efforts to preserve what is arguably the most famous sports stadium in the United States never went anywhere. A move to have the stadium declared a national historic landmark was rejected due to the venue's extensive renovation in the 1970s.

The newspaper noted, however, that landmark status hasn't saved Detroit's Tiger Stadium and Municipal Stadium in Cleveland from being torn down.
