
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Gus Frerotte took over Minnesota's offense Sunday and led the Vikings to a 20-10 victory over Carolina, their first win of the season.
Frerotte, in his first game as starting quarterback after Coach Brad Childress benched Tarvaris Jackson, threw for 204 yards and a touchdown. The veteran quarterback completed 16 of 28 passes.
The Vikings' defense, led by E.J. Henderson and Devin Williams, held the Panthers to 47 yards rushing. Henderson had 12 tackles and Williams contributed two sacks.
Minnesota's Antoine Winfield returned a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown.
Adrian Peterson, who has been nursing a hamstring injury, ran for 77 yards on 17 carries for the Vikings (1-2)
Carolina's Jake Delhome completed 17 passes for 191 yards
Steve Smith had four receptions for 70 yards for the Panthers (2-1).
