Zvonareva, Shuai advance in China

GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Vera Zvonareva and Chinese native Peng Shuai won their semifinal matches Saturday at the Guangzhou International Women's Open in Guangzhou, China.

The top-seeded Zvonareva, of Russia, beat third-seeded Zheng Jie, another Chinese native and fan favorite 6-3, 7-5 in one semifinal. She helped Russia capture its second straight Fed Cup title last week in Spain and this summer won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Shuai, the fourth seed, trounced unseeded Camille Pin of France 6-2, 6-1.

Sunday's winner of the Zvonareva-Shuai match will claim a $28,000 first-place check.
