Report: Iowa sex assault case mishandled

DES MOINES, Iowa, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Officials at the University of Iowa made mistakes in an investigation of alleged sexual assault involving football players, The Des Moines Register reported.

The report said that there was no coverup but the mistakes occurred because the school stuck to procedure instead of helping the alleged victim.

A 74-page report of a six-week investigation about the incident was given to the school's Board of Regents Thursday.

Its conclusion said the school acted properly following the assault report, the Register said.

Two former Iowa football players have been charged with sexually assaulting a former female student-athlete in an unoccupied room on campus last Oct. 14. Abe Satterfield, 20, and Cedric Everson, 19, have pleaded innocent of second-degree sex abuse and Satterfield has entered an innocent plea to a third-degree sex abuse charge.

Both men will stand trial Nov. 3 in Johnson County, Iowa, and the school's athletic department has been absolved, the Register said.
