NEW YORK, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Brett Gardner doubled home a run and saved another with a spectacular catch Friday, helping the New York Yankees edge Baltimore 3-2.
The game was the first in the final series to be played in Yankee Stadium, a building that opened 85 years ago and has been host to 37 World Series. It will be torn down at the end of the season and the Yankees will move across the street to their new home in 2009.
Starter Carl Pavano (4-1) got the win, surviving five innings while allowing two runs on six hits. Mariano Rivera picked up his 37th save of the season.
Gardner's double tied the game at 2-2 in the third and Johnny Damon scored the go-ahead run in the fifth when he dashed home on a wild pitch by losing pitcher Radhames Liz (6-6).
Gardner took a home run away from Luke Scott in the fourth when his perfectly timed leap allowed him to catch the ball above the wall in center.
