BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Aric Goodman kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime Thursday to give unbeaten Colorado a 17-14 victory over No. 24 West Virginia.
The Mountaineers had the first possession in overtime, but they failed to pick up a first down on a third-and-one attempt from the Colorado four-yard line. Pat McAfee was then called on to kick a field goal, but his attempt hit the left upright and bounced away.
Colorado, needing any kind of score on its possession to win the game, picked up one first down before turning things over to Goodman for the deciding kick.
The Buffaloes (3-0) jumped to a quick 14-0 lead on Cody Hawkins touchdown passes of 38 yards to Josh Smith and 13 yards to Patrick Devenny. Those scores came in the game's first five minutes, but West Virginia got a six-yard scoring run from Patrick White late in the first period and a 39-yarder from White in the third quarter.
Hawkins completed 22 of 33 passes for 179 yards. White gained 148 yards on 19 carries for West Virginia (1-2), which was coming off a loss to East Carolina last week.
