The White Sox saw their lead in the American League Central trimmed to 1 1/2 games over Minnesota when the Twins rallied in the ninth to defeat Tampa Bay.
Abreu hit a two-run blast in the first inning to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. He added a solo shot in the third and delivered a two-run single during New York's four-run fourth. Abreu's ground out in the fifth produced his sixth RBI of the game.
Mike Mussina (18-9) worked six innings to get the win. He allowed a run on five hits with four strikeouts.
Javier Vazquez (12-14) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs in 3 2/3.
New York will now begin its final home series in Yankee Stadium, a three-game affair against Baltimore that will end Sunday. The Yankees will conclude the season with a six-game road trip and will move into their new stadium next year.
