The Tigers produced 17 hits against seven Texas pitchers to bring an emphatic end to a six-game losing streak.
Six Tigers had at least two RBI and Detroit blew open what had been a 2-1 game after four innings.
Ordonez had two hits in the nine-run fifth, during which the Tigers sent 14 men to the plate. He had a two-run single in the inning, as did Edgar Renteria. Ryan Raburn also contributed a two-run triple in the frame.
Detroit came back with five runs in the sixth, which included an RBI single from Ordonez and a three-run homer by Miguel Cabrera.
The onslaught allowed Freddy Garcia (1-0) to earn the win in his first appearance since June of last year. His 2007 season was cut short by a shoulder injury while with Philadelphia and he signed with the Tigers last month.
The loss went to Dustin Nippert (3-5), who gave up five runs on six hits in 4 1/3.
