Ex-soccer star Gascoigne may be in custody

YORK, England, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Police say they cannot confirm reports Paul Gascoigne, a former member of the British national soccer team, has been arrested for criminal damage.

The Mirror said Thursday an unidentified police spokeswoman confirmed a 41-year-old man had been arrested in Gateshead and that suspect is thought to be the former Newcastle United player.

"A 41-year-old man was arrested at an address in Ravensworth Road, Dunston this morning on suspicion of criminal damage," the spokeswoman said.

"Inquiries are going."

The newspaper said an alleged incident with a freelance photographer resulted in Gascoigne's arrest outside the The Metz Experience tavern.

The former soccer standout allegedly banged on the bar's windows and doors repeatedly and even attempted to enter the facility using his own keys, the Mirror said.

The newspaper said the alleged incident marks the most recent reported problem for Gascoigne, who allegedly has had other problems with the police and his own mental health.
