Report: Arenas out after knee surgery

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has underdone surgery on his left knee and it is unknown how long he will be out, the NBA team said on its Web site.

Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld issued a release saying Arenas had an arthroscopic lavage procedure performed on his left knee Wednesday. The operation was to to clean out debris that came from two surgeries on the same knee in the last two seasons.

Arenas had been limited during the rehab process this summer and hasn't participated in training camp nor the preseason. The Wizards release said no timetable was announced for Arenas' return.

"I just had some floating debris in there that was slowing me down," Arenas told The Washington Post. "It was irritating the knee so we decided to go in there and clean it out. This should actually allow me to come back faster."

The second-round pick by Golden State in the 2001 NBA draft out of Arizona played in 13 games last season and signed a six-year, $111 million contract this summer. A left knee ailment also caused him to miss the final eight regular-season games in 2006.
