Chicago starter John Danks scattered four hits over six scoreless innings with six strikeouts and one walk, but did not figure in the decision. The Tigers got to the White Sox bullpen for two runs in the seventh on a Mike Hessman home run and five runs in the eighth on Curtis Granderson's solo shot and a grand slam by Marcus Thames.

Matt Thornton (5-3) worked 1 2/3 scoreless to get the win for Chicago, which finished the day 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Minnesota in the AL Central.

Starter Kenny Rogers allowed seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in the Tigers' fourth straight loss.

Bobby Seay (1-2) took the loss after pitching 2/3 of an inning in relief.

The White Sox won the opener 4-2.
