EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Dave van den Bergh's tiebreaking goal in the 64th minute Saturday led the New York Red Bulls to a 2-1 victory against Real Salt Lake.

RSL took a 1-0 halftime advantage when Yura Movsisyan scored in the 38th minute. New York tied the contest 1-1 on Juan Pablo Angel's tally in the 49th minute, setting the stage for van den Bergh's game-winner.

A loss would have put New York in a precarious playoff position in the Eastern Conference. The Red Bulls (9-7-8) control the first wild-card spot and lead D.C. United by two points with six games remaining.

D.C. United played FC Dallas to a 2-2 tie Saturday night.

RSL (8-9-7) holds the second spot in the Western table ahead of of Houston, which played San Jose in Saturday's late game.
