NEW YORK, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Veteran closer Billy Wagner thinks his days in a New York Mets uniform are over, the New York Post reported Friday.
The 37-year-old left-hander has started a 12-month rehabilitation period following reconstructive elbow surgery this week.
"I've played my last day as a Met, that's the way it goes," Wagner said in an interview Thursday from his home in Greenwich, Conn. "It's going to be hard to find that team that gives you a chance to get 400 saves and gives you a shot to win a championship when you're coming back from major surgery. There are not going to be too many people beating down my door."
Wagner, placed on the disabled list on Aug. 3, has 385 saves in 15 major league seasons with the Mets, Houston and Philadelphia. He had 27 saves this season before he was injured.
He has one year remaining on the $43 million contract he signed before the 2006 season.
