TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia says he is healthy enough to start Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons, but is being benched.
Brian Griese will start because Buccaneers officials claim that Garcia has a sprained ankle.
"The ankle, I'm going to go out and run around today," Garcia told Tampa-area reporters Thursday. "I feel like it is heeling up fast. It was one of those things where I just rolled my ankle unfortunately it was stiff on Monday. I've played through a lot worse before and that is not anything new."
In last Sunday's 24-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints, Garcia completed 24 of 41 passes for 221, one touchdown and one interception, but the reigning NFC South champions had only one touchdown drive, which came early in the fourth quarter with Garcia at quarterback.
The interception came with less than a minute remaining and Tampa Bay driving.
Griese did not play.
