ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Alfredo Aceves baffled the Los Angeles Angels in his first major league start, limiting them to one run on five hits in a 7-1 New York Yankees win Tuesday.
Aceves (1-0) struck out two in his seven-inning effort.
Derek Jeter's two hits in five at-bats sent him past Babe Ruth on the Yankees' all-time hit list. Johnny Damon homered twice and had three RBI for the Yankees, who are 8 1/2 games back of Boston in the wild card race. Alex Rodriguez added a three-run homer and Xavier Nady had one RBI.
The losing pitcher was Ervin Santana (15-6), who coughed up six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Vladimir Guerrero's RBI groundout accounted for the Angels' only run.
