Federer Monday defeated Andy Murray in straight sets in winning his 13th career Grand Slam event. But since it was a title defense and he was credited with the same number of ratings points as the points he won in the 2007 U.S. Open expired.

Nadal, who lost in the tournament semifinals to Murray, was a fourth-round loser in the 2007 U.S. Open so gained 300 ratings points this week. He has 7,000 points to Federer's 5,930. Nadal ended Federer's record 237-week run at No. 1 on Aug. 17.

Novak Djokovic who lost to Federer in the U.S. Open semifinals, remains in third with 4,855 points. Murray climbed two spots to fourth in the world with 3,040 points.

David Ferrer (2,490 points) and Nikolay Davydenko (2,400) each slipped one spot to fifth and sixth, respectively.

David Nalbandian, ranked seventh, and No. 8 Andy Roddick kept their previous positions but Fernando Gonzalez improved two spots to ninth and Stanislas Wawrinka remained No. 10.
