Brady was injured in the first quarter of the Patriots' season-opening 17-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. An examination Monday revealed an injury that will need surgery to repair. While the team didn't detail the injury, team officials said Brady will be placed on the injured reserve list, ending his season.
"We feel bad for Tom," New England Coach Bill Belichick said flatly. "He played one position. He played it very well. I feel badly for Tom."
Brady completed 7 of 11 passes for 76 yards before he was injured Sunday. He has thrown for more than 26,000 yards and 197 touchdowns in his nine-year NFL career -- all with New England. He had started 128 consecutive games for the Patriots and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.
Matt Cassel replaced Brady Sunday and is expected to remain the team's starter at quarterback.
