Schiavone sharp in Bali tennis opener

BALI, Indonesia, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Francesca Schiavone posted an impressive straight-set win Monday in the first round of the $225,000 Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Indonesia.

Schiavone dispatched Sandy Gumulya 6-2 6-0, dropping her serve just once and breaking Gumulya's five times.

Also winning Monday, as the hard-court tournament opened in Bali, was ninth-seeded Shuai Peng, who defeated Ayumo Morita 6-2, 6-1. In matches involving unseeded players, Tamira Paszek beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld 7-5, 6-4; Akgul Amanmuradova stopped Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-2, 6-1; Marta Domachowska topped Lavinia Tananta 6-2, 6-3; and Meng Yuan was a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 winner over Yaroslava Shvedova.

Lindsay Davenport won the 2007 edition of the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic but is not defending her title. Daniela Hantuchova, last year's runner-up, is the tournament's No. 1 seed.

The tournament continues through Sunday when the champion will collect $35,000.
