Report: Brady may be out for season

FOXBOROUGH, Mass., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, injured in his team's season-opener Sunday, may be done for the season, Yahoo! Sports reported.

The 31-year-old star is scheduled for an MRI Monday on his left knee, Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said.

The knee has serious ligament damage, Yahoo! Sports said, citing a source on the team.

"It's bad," a source said in the Yahoo! report. "We're going to have to play without him."

Brady was injured in the first quarter of the Patriots' 17-10 win over Kansas City. He was helped from the field, left the game and did not return.

Matt Cassel took over as quarterback for the Patriots and passed for 152 yards and a touchdown.

The Patriots have been to four Super Bowls, winning three of them, with Brady.

Murray tops Nadal in U.S. Open semifinals

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Britain's Andy Murray finished off a stunning defeat of world No. 1 Rafael Nadal Sunday to reach the championship match of the U.S. Open.

Murray will play reigning four-time open champion Roger Federer for the title Monday.

The 21-year-old Murray, a native of Scotland, completed a rain-interrupted, two-day match with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-4 win over Nadal.

Murray held a two-set lead with Nadal leading in the third set when their semifinal match was suspended because of rain Saturday. After play resumed, Nadal won the third set and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, but Murray stormed back to take the match.

It was the first time he had beaten the Spaniard, who was seeded No. 1.

The young Scot, seeded sixth, will play in his first Grand Slam final.

Switzerland's Federer, the No. 2 seed, eliminated third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 Saturday in the other semifinal match.

Federer has won 33 consecutive matches in the U.S. Open.

Murray and Federer have played three times in ATP events with the Scotsman winning twice.

Villegas gets first win on PGA Tour

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Camilo Villegas shot a 3-under-par 68 Sunday and won the BMW Championship in St. Louis, his first victory on the PGA Tour.

Villegas completed the event in 15-under 265 at the Bellerive Country Club, two shots ahead of Dudley Hart, who closed with a 5-under 65.

Anthony Kim (67) and Jim Furyk (70) tied for third at 12-under 268.

"I don't know what to say," Villegas said. "It's just a lot of hard work and a lot of people behind me."

Villegas won $1.26 million.

The victory elevated Villegas to second place on the FedEx Cup playoff points race behind Vijay Singh, who placed 44th in the BMW event and has all but clinched the cup title and its $10 million top prize.

All Singh has to do to take the cup is complete four rounds in the Tour Championship, coming up in three weeks.

Jimmie Johnson wins Sprint Cup race

RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson drove his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the checkered flag to capture Sunday's Sprint Cup Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond, Va.

The race at the Richmond International Raceway was postponed from Saturday because of the threat of tropical storm Hanna.

The two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion won the race by holding off a furious challenge from Tony Stewart in the final laps.

Having also won last Sunday's Pepsi 500 at Fontana, Calif., Johnson has now won his last two Sprint races and 37 in his Sprint Cup career.

"It's hard not to feel that way," Johnson told The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer when asked if he felt like his team is peaking at the right time. "I think our chances are good."

Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin finished third through fifth, giving Chevrolet a top-five sweep at Richmond.

Clint Bowyer finished 12th, clinching the 12th and final spot in the "Chase for the Sprint Cup" championship beginning next Sunday.

Coaching pioneer Haskins dies at 78

EL PASO, Texas, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Hall of Fame Coach Don Haskins, who guided Texas Western College to the 1966 NCAA basketball title, died Sunday, the El Paso (Texas) Times reported. He was 78.

Haskins died at his El Paso home, KBDC TV in El Paso reported.

Haskins was one of the winningest coaches in college basketball history with a record of 719-354 in 38 seasons with Texas Western (now UTEP).

His teams won seven Western Athletic Conference titles and made 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Texas Western championship in 1966 was considered a landmark that transformed college basketball. Haskins started five black players who defeated an all-white Kentucky team, coached by Adolph Rupp, 72-65 for the national title.

The team and coach were portrayed in the 2006 Disney film "Glory Road," which starred Josh Lucas as Haskins.
