EL PASO, Texas, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Hall of Fame Coach Don Haskins, who guided Texas Western College to the 1966 NCAA basketball title, died Sunday, the El Paso (Texas) Times reported. He was 78.
Haskins died at his El Paso home, KBDC TV in El Paso reported.
Haskins was one of the winningest coaches in college basketball history with a record of 719-354 in 38 seasons with Texas Western (now UTEP).
His teams won seven Western Athletic Conference titles and made 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament.
The Texas Western championship in 1966 was considered a landmark that transformed college basketball. Haskins started five black players who defeated an all-white Kentucky team, coached by Adolph Rupp, 72-65 for the national title.
The team and coach were portrayed in the 2006 Disney film "Glory Road," which starred Josh Lucas as Haskins.
