MILWAUKEE, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Endy Chavez drove in Daniel Murphy with a 10-inning sacrifice fly Tuesday, giving the New York Mets a 6-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The victory kept New York two games ahead of Philadelphia in the National League East. The Phillies shut out Washington 4-0 Tuesday.
Murphy, inserted as a pinch-hitter, had led off with a single against Salomon Torres (6-4) and made it to third on Jose Reyes's bunt single. That set the stage for Chavez, who was a late-game defensive replacement for Nick Evans.
The win went to Joe Smith, who improved to 3-3 even though he got just one out. Luis Ayala got the save after allowing two base-runners in the bottom of the 10th.
Carlos Beltran smacked a three-run home run for the Mets, while Rickie Weeks hit a solo shot for the Brewers.
