SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Darren Huckerby scored the decisive goal Saturday and the San Jose Earthquakes escaped the MLS Western Conference basement with a 2-1 win over Kansas City.

Huckerby scored in the 83rd minute for his third goal -- to go with three assists -- in six games since coming to San Jose in July. Earlier in the game, Arturo Alvarez had scored his fifth goal of the season to put the Quakes up 1-0.

With their third win in four games, the Earthquakes (6-9-7) ran their unbeaten streak to seven games and forged a tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy for fifth place in the West.

Davy Arnaud tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the 64th minute for Kansas City.

The Wizards (6-8-8) remain tied with Toronto FC for last place in the East.
