MIAMI, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez yielded two runs and seven hits in six innings Sunday, helping the New York Mets down the Florida Marlins 6-2.

In one of his best starts in a season filled with personal turmoil, Martinez (5-3) walked one batter and fanned four, and since 64 of his 101 pitches were strikes, the cagey right-hander was able to avoid a big Florida inning.

Carlos Beltran, Nick Evans and David Wright all homered.

Wright led a 12-hit attack with three hits, while three players had two hits for the Mets, whose victory assured their retaining first place in the National League East.

Florida's Luis Gonzalez had three hits and one RBI. Mike Jacobs also had one RBI. John Baker had three hits and Hanley Ramirez two for the Marlins, losers in six of their last 10 games.

Losing pitcher Scott Olsen (6-9) gave up six earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
