NORTON, Mass., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Mike Weir equaled the lowest round of the year on the PGA Tour Friday and took a three-shot lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Weir shot a 10-under 61 over the TPC of Boston course. It was the lowest score of his professional career.
"I am in a good frame of mind." Weir said. "The course played about as easy as it could."
Among those tied for second at 64 was Vijay Singh, who took over the lead in the FedEx Cup playoffs with his sudden death victory at The Barclays last week. Briny Baird, Heath Slocum and John Merrick were also at 64.
A victory by Singh this week would guarantee he would lead the FedEx Cup race going into next month's Tour Championship.
Eric Axley and Ben Curtis were tied for sixth at 65. Sergio Garcia, who lost in the playoff to Singh last week, shot a 67.
Kuznetsova out at U.S. Open
NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Open women's winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia suffered a 3-6, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 third-round loss at this season's tournament Friday.
The women's third seed joined top-seeded Ana Ivanovic on the sidelines after losing to Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik.
Kuznetsova, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, lost on Srebotnik's third match point when she misfired long on a return of serve.
Kuznetsova lost to retired Belgian Justine Henin in last year's U.S. Open final and won the evemt in 2004. In June, she knocked off Serena Williams in straight sets in a third-round match at the French Open.
Other women's winners Friday included second-seeded Elena Jankovic and Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva.
Cubs win seventh in a row
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Alfonso Soriano put Chicago in front with a seventh-inning homer Friday and the Cubs won their seventh game in a row -- 3-2 over Philadelphia.
The Phillies, who coughed up a late-inning lead against the Cubs Thursday, jumped to a 2-0 advantage Friday. A bases-loaded walk to Kosuke Fukudome in the sixth tied the game and Soriano untied it with his one-out shot in the seventh off Clay Condrey (3-4).
The Cubs got four innings of scoreless relief pitching, with Steve Samardzija (1-0) getting the win with a 1 1/3-inning stint. Carlos Marmol worked the ninth for his seventh save.
Philadelphia, which began the day one game behind the New York Mets in the National League East, have lost three straight.
Report: Others eyed in Bonds case
NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. authorities are looking at two people in an effort to pressure Greg Anderson to testify against former slugger Barry Bonds, The New York Times (NYSE:NYT) reported.
Anderson is Bonds' former personal trainer.
The Times report said federal authorities are considering criminal charges against Anderson's wife, Nicole Gestas, and his mother-in-law, Madeleine Gestas.
The newspaper reported this summer that a federal "target letter" to Anderson's wife, dated last November, indicated authorities had shifted their focus to Madeline Gestas' taxes.
She is a California businesswoman who previously has been subject to tax liens.
"There are violations that both Nicole and Madeleine are worried about," Nicole Gestas' attorney, Charles J. Smith of Redwood City, Calif., told the Times. "They are matters that I don't believe would rise to the level they would prosecute under the current standards of the U.S. attorney's office."
Bonds has denied the charges and Anderson has vowed never to testify.
