NORTON, Mass., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Mike Weir shot 10-under-par 61 in Friday's first round and has a three-stroke lead at the PGA Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Mass.
Weir had a strong start, making birdies at each of the first four holes. The bogey-free round included 10 birdies in all, including the 18th hole.
"I feel calmer out there," Weir said after the lowest-scoring round in his career. "I am in a good frame of mind. The course played about as easy as it could."
Vijay Singh -- last week's winner in a dramatic two-hole playoff against Sergio Garcia at the Barclays Golf Tournament in Paramus, N.J., and a former Deutsche Bank winner -- shares second place with Briny Baird, Heath Slocum and John Merrick at 7-under 64.
Garcia joined eight others at 4-under 67 to tie for 19th place, while defending champion Phil Mickelson opened with a 2-under 69 and joined 16 others in a tie for 47th.
