WACO, Texas, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Riley Skinner threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns Thursday in leading No. 23 Wake Forest to a season-opening, 41-13 thumping of Baylor.
The Demon Deacons scored the game's first 17 points against a Baylor team that did not know until just before kickoff which quarterback would start the contest.
Three players competed for the quarterback position during pre-season practice sessions and Robert Griffin ended up with the start. He completed 11 of 19 passes for 126 yards.
The game was one of 14 contests that opened the major college season. Wake Forest was the only ranked team in action Thursday.
After Sam Swank opened the scoring with a 40-yard field goal, Skinner threw 12 yards for a touchdown to Chip Brinkman. Brandon Pendergrass added a three-yard scoring run early in the second period for a 17-0 lead.
Skinner's other two touchdown passes came in the third quarter, an eight-yarder to Brinkman and a 43-yarder to Ben Wooster that gave Wake Forest a 34-6 lead.
