EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- David Carr completed 20-of-29 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns Thursday, leading the New York Giants past New England 19-14.
With quarterback Tom Brady sitting out the last game of the exhibition season, the defending AFC Champion Patriots closed out the tuneup campaign winless.
Carr, chosen first in the NFL draft seven years ago by Houston, played the entire game and paced the Giants to a 19-0 lead in the fourth period. New England's Kevin O'Connell, a rookie who is expected to be Brady's backup at the start of the season, then drove the Patriots to two scores.
Carr threw a 26-yard scoring pass to Darcy Johnson in the first period and hit Sinorice Moss with a nine-yarder in the second.
O'Connell found Chad Jackson with a 16-yard touchdown throw with 9:26 to play and then O'Connell scored on a five-yard run with 4:50 left.
New York (2-2) will begin defense of its Super Bowl title next Thursday, playing host to Washington in the NFL regular-season opener. New England (0-4) will be at home against Kansas City.
