NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Jason Giambi's ninth-inning RBI single Thursday gave the New York Yankees a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Giambi knocked in all three runs, including a pinch-hit two-run home run with two outs in the seventh that created a 2-2 tie. Giambi's 27th homer this season came while he was batting for catcher Jose Molina.

Derek Jeter had three hits for the Yankees, who averted a three-game sweep against their AL East rivals. A loss would have left them eight games behind Boston in the AL wild card race, but instead, the Yankees pulled within six games of Boston with 29 to play.

The winning pitcher was closer Mariano Rivera (5-5).

Boston's Jason Varitek and Jacoby Ellsbury both knocked one run in the fifth.

The losing pitcher was Justin Masterson (4-4).

It was the last time in the regular season that the Yankees and Red Sox faced off in the current Yankees Stadium.
