BOYNTON BEACH, Fla., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- American silver-medal Olympics swimmer Dara Torres has undergone surgery on her painful right shoulder.

Torres, 41, was the oldest person ever to qualify for an Olympic swimming team when she earned three silver medals at the Beijing Summer Games this month. When she returned to the states, she admitted competing despite the injury.

Surgery on the five-time career Olympian was performed by Dr. Joseph Chalal in Boynton Beach, Fla.

Before the procedure, Torres' agent, Evan Morgenstein, had told the Florida South Sun-Sentinel the swimmer "started a revolution in health and fitness" and that she "will have a greater impact on men and women ages 30-55."

No word was given about Torres' rehabilitation period or routine, but she will be occupied as much as possible with her 2-year-old daughter, Tessa Grace, the report said.

Also, 24-year-old American Eric Shanteau underwent surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta to remove a cancerous testicle after fulfilling his goal of competing in Beijing in the 200-meter breaststroke.
