
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Jody Gerut's eighth-inning single boosted the San Diego Padres to a 5-4 win over Arizona, finishing a three-game sweep.
Gerut's third hit followed a two-out steal by Chase Headley and snapped a 4-4 tie.
San Diego's Nick Hundley had two hits, one a solo seventh-inning homer, and two RBI, while Headley and Kevin Kouzmanoff had one RBI each for the Padres, who had lost seven in a row before their surprising sweep.
The winner was Mike Adams (2-3). Closer Trevor Hoffman earned his 27th save.
Chris Young and Arizona starter Randy Johnson both had two hits and one RBI.
Two others knocked in one run and Adam Dunn added two hits in the National League West-leading Diamondbacks' fourth loss in a row.
The losing pitcher was Chad Qualls (2-8).
The 44-year-old Johnson, a potential hall of famer, gave up three earned runs and five hits in seven innings while bidding for his 294th career victory.
