
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Jason Marquis gave up five hits in seven scoreless innings Wednesday to help the Chicago Cubs blank Pittsburgh 2-0, completing a three-game sweep.
After Carlos Marmol hurled a 1-2-3 eighth, closer Kerry Wood earned his 27th save this season.
Both relievers struck out two of the three batters they faced.
Chicago scored its runs in the top of the seventh without any RBI hits.
One scored on a bases-loaded grounder by Ronny Cedeno and the other on Henry Blanco's squeeze bunt.
In his first shutout this season, Marquis (9-7) induced 11 ground ball outs.
Mark DeRosa and Alfonso Soriano had two hits each in the NL Central-leading Cubs' 13th win in their last 16 games.
Raul Chavez had two of the five hits for the Pirates, whose losing streak grew to seven games in a row.
Losing pitcher Zack Duke (4-13) surrendered two earned runs and seven hits in eight innings with two walks six strikeouts.
