Verdasco rolls into semis in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco moved on to the semifinals of the Pilot Pen Tennis event in New Haven, Conn., Thursday with a straight-set win over Mischa Zverev.

Verdasco, of Spain, defeated the German player 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

American Mardy Fish, the No. 8 seed, advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision over countryman Jesse Levine.

Slovenian qualifier Luka Gregorc downed seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to reach the semis. Gregorc, the world's 434th-ranked player, had knocked off Croat Ivo Karlovic, the No. 2 seed, earlier in the event.

Croatia's Marin Cilic upset Russian Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-2.
