DETROIT, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions Friday signed Drew Henson as a backup quarterback.

Henson, 28, has had limited play in the NFL. He passed for 78 yards and a touchdown with the Dallas Cowboys in 2004 and was on the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad in 2006.

The former Michigan star also played professional baseball, spending time in the New York Yankees' organization.

The Lions signed Henson after learning that backup quarterback Drew Stanton will be sidelined about a month because of a sprained thumb.
